The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Colorado is Colorado's only
statewide coalition promoting awareness, education and advocacy for
suicide prevention. SPCC began in 1998 as an outgrowth of Governor
Romer’s Suicide Prevention Advisory Commission. This commission was
charged with developing a state plan for reducing Colorado’s suicide
rate. When the Commission and its Citizens’ Advisory Panel terminated,
members continued the work as SPCC to continue the efforts of suicide
prevention.
Originally, under the fiscal sponsorship of the Mental Health
Association of Colorado’s 501(c)3 authority, SPCC began to form its
organizational structure. When Governor Owens took office, SPCC members
worked to educate the new administration about suicide prevention
issues. Today, SPCC is under the fiscal sponsorship of the Rocky
Mountain Research and Prevention Institute.
For more than a decade, SPCC has played an integral role in suicide
prevention in Colorado. What sets SPCC apart from the Office of Suicide
Prevention (OSP), and that which SPCC is most proud of, is its advocacy
work and the active role SPCC takes to ensure suicide prevention remains
a critical part of legislative agendas. The activities of SPCC are
supported through our Prisms fundraiser, membership fees, memorial
donations, and in-kind services.
